Witr

The last prayer of the night that the Prophet ﷺ highly emphasized performing

  1. Pray 3 Raka’āt of Prayer [intending Witr] after 'Ishā'
  2. On the Third Rak’ah, Recite Du’ā’ al-Qunūt Before going into Rukū’

Duʿāʾ al-Qunūt

Dear God! We seek Your help and forgiveness
We believe in You and put our trust in You
We praise and thank You, and we do not reject You
We cast out and abandon anyone who disobeys You

Allah! We worship You alone
and we pray and bow our heads to the ground for You alone
We earnestly strive and hasten to You alone
We hope for Your grace and fear Your punishment
No doubt, Your true punishment will be dealt to the disbelievers.

Dear God! Guide me like those You have guided
Protect me like those You have protected
Guard me like those You have guarded
Bless me in what You have given me
And save me from the evil which You know
Because You decree and nothing can be decreed against You
Whomever You support can never be disgraced
You are blessed, Master, and high above all else.

allāhumma h-dinī fī man hadayt

fa innaka taqḍī wa lā yuqḍā ʿalayk
wa innahu lā yadhillu maw-wālayt
tabārakta rabbanā wa taʿālayt

Allah, I seek protection in Your Pleasure against Your Wrath.
And I seek protection in Your Pardon against Your chastisement.
And I seek protection from You with You.
I am not capable of praising You properly.
You are as You have praised Yourself

Witr Prayer

Overview

Witr literally means “odd,” which is in reference to the odd number of raka’āt (units) in the prayer. It is one of the most emphasized prayers outside the 5 daily prayers.

Prerequisites

  • Same prerequisites as for any other prayer - wuḍūʾ, intention, face the qibla, etc.
  • It is recommended to delay the witr prayer to the last third of the night and to make it your final prayer of the day

How

The prayer is very similar to the three raka’āt Maghrib prayer. After reciting Fātiḥah and another sūrahin the third rakʿah, say the takbir and raise your hands to your ears as you would at the beginning of prayer. Lower them back down and hold them as they were before and then recite the qunūt duʿāʾ. Then complete the third rak’ah as normal (by going into rukūʿ and so on). It is recommended that, in the first rakʿah recite Sūrah al-Aʿlā, al-Kāfirūn in the second, and al-Ikhlāṣ in the third, though you may recite other sūrahs if you’d like.

If you do not have the qunūt duʿāʾ memorized yet, the simplest thing you can say is, “subḥān-Allāh”, (Allāh is above all imperfection) three times instead. You should try and memorize the qunūt du’ā’ in the meantime.

If you forget to perform the qunūt duʿāʾ, it is considered to be a correctable mistake and may be compensated with two additional sajdahs at the end of the prayer.

FAQ

Yes. Witr is extremely emphasized, and needs to be prayed (wājib). Consequently, if it is missed, it needs to be made up. It is reported that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Whoever misses the witr prayer due to sleep or forgetfulness should perform it when he remembers it.”

If someone forgot to say the qunūt before going into rukūʿ, they don’t make it up by saying it after rukūʿ. Instead, it is made up by the two sajdah of forgetfulness.

Everyone should strive their utmost to memorize it beforehand. However, should one decide to read from their phone, it should be done with little to no extra movements (i.e., turning, picking up phone, unlocking screen, going to website).

Simple: have the phone unlocked, already open to the website and on airplane mode before starting prayer and leave it within arms reach.
Yes, in the Shāfiʿī school, for example, one would pray two rakaʿāt and say salām to end the prayer and then pray one more rakʿah on its own. Duʿāʾ al-qunūt may also be said after standing up from rukūʿ as opposed to before it.

All these forms are valid and are based on proofs from the sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ.
Yes, there are multiple versions of duʿāʾ al-qunūt which have been taught by the Prophet ﷺ. We have provided all versions above, though the first two are most preferred.
Any duʿāʾ is valid and completely acceptable. However it is vastly superior to recite the sunnah duʿāʾ.
Yes. Any part of the prayer in which one moves their tongue and lips (which should be for all phrases in the prayer), then that must be done in Arabic.

However, if there are personal supplications one wishes to make, and they are unable to phrase them in Arabic, then by all means, they should make those English/Urdu/Malay/Spanish duʿāʾ - but they should try and “think” those duʿāʾ and not move their tongue/lips. This is the heart of making duʿāʾ that it comes from ones heart with care and concern.
A group can pray Witr in congregation only in Ramaḍān, wherein there is more reward for one to pray it in congregation than to do so alone.
If one joins a Witr congregation, and missed the portion for qunūt, they will not need to recite the qunūt on their own when making up the missed units.
No. The Prophet ﷺ said, “There are no two witr in one night.”
While it is best to make witr the last prayer of your day, you may pray additional nafl (voluntary) prayers afterwards so long as they are an even number of raka’āt.

There are some narrations that mention The Prophet ﷺ praying two units after Witr sitting down. Now, The Prophet ﷺ did do this, but it was not his habit ﷺ. Thus, we should not make it a normal habit. If one chooses to follow this, they should do it every once in a while, and not everyday.
